PS4 won’t support current-gen PSN games!? (Play Station 3 2-21-13)

Ok, I’m not really a Play Station user, but this is a pretty big deal to potential buyers of the PS4. Now why would Sony make their new system unable to support the current gen PSN games? Could they be making a new Play Station store?

Sony’s already given a bit of an indication for its plans with PlayStation 4 backward compatibility, floating the idea that all PlayStation games ever can be accessed from any device. However, it appears as if that transition won’t be entirely seamless.

In a Q&A session following yesterday’s PS4 announcement, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said that PlayStation 3 games purchased through the PSN would not be accessible on the PS4. Yoshida attributed this decision to the PS4’s switch away from the PS3’s Cell CPU architecture.

However, the Sony exec didn’t rule out the PSN backward compatibility outright. Yoshida said that the company is looking into how it can use Gaikai to offer some of these games to PS4 owners. He also reiterated that it is Sony’s goal to offer every PlayStation game on any device.

During the same Q&A session, Yoshida confirmed that the PlayStation 4 would indeed support used games. He also indicated that Sony would not be extending Japan’s PS Vita price cut to the West.
